Two shifts, two systems

The waiter writes the room number on the check. The night receptionist doesn’t see it. In the morning, the guest leaves, and you either bill them an estimate or let them go and look up the amount in the restaurant’s daily closing report.

A room is a form of payment, not a note

The POS system can send the bill to the room. The hotel account links it to the guest’s stay, the date, and the guest. Upon checkout, the front desk doesn’t have to call the restaurant to ask if “the gentleman from 204 had anything.” It’s already included in the guest’s stay along with the room charge.

It works the other way around, too: if the restaurant isn’t part of your shift, you still need one room number and one bill. A note on the receipt won’t preserve that number after the close.
